Delphi Welcomes the Famine Walk

On Saturday 18th May, 165 years since the Great Famine year of 1849, the annual Afri Famine Walk will finally be welcomed through the gates of Delphi Lodge to a symbolic and respectful reception.

The occasion will be marked with the planting of ‘’Symbols of Life’’ – a tree and potatoes.

Now as we welcome guests from all over the world and are privileged to extend a genuine Irish hospitality to so many. Now is the time to finally and symbolically open our gates to the names of those who perished in those terrible times. Lorna Siggins covers all in her recent article in the Irish Times.

Atlantic Weather brings Renewed Hope, Fish and Growth

As of yesterday our Atlantic weather returned with a vengeance. The river looked totally different with water in it and with the milder weather one could almost hear the grass grow All lakes were unfishable and people had difficulty standing up on the river not alone casting a fly.

Before I start waxing lyrically about the fish we have caught today, I must first of all compliment all the anglers we had last week who persisted fishing in the face of adversity. Adversity of course being dreadful fishing conditions. In fairness there was a fish or two risen but to no avail. Some of our anglers even tried fishing the small Brown Trout lakes but the brownies were not even taking. So well done to all of you and sorry I can’t organise the conditions.

The river rose to 50 yesterday but was almost impossible to fish with the wind. There was a good tide yesterday evening and I saw a number of fish entering the river, which was indeed a welcome sight. Sadly none of them were in the taking mood.

Today however is a different story with 3 caught on the lakes so far.

Rob Fanshawe with Terry Johnson at the helm had the first of the day, off Doolough weighing in at 11lbs.

Bob Hadden got off to a great start with a fish 8lbs8ozs off Finlough on a Willie Gunn. Hopefully it will be his first of many for the week.

David Parry , a member of John Faith’s party managed to land his first ever salmon off a lake. It weighed in at 9lbs6ozs and was taken from Fin Stream on a Willie Gunn.

With conditions looking good for the next few days I would be very hopeful that we will get plenty of fish this week!!

Delphi Lodge Famine Walk

Delphi Lodge Welcomes Famine Walk

Delphi Lodge Country House is honoured to announce that it will be playing a significant role in this year’s Famine Walk. This will be our “Gathering” theme.

Every year since 1988, AFRI (Action from Ireland) have commemorated a local tragedy which took place at the end of March 1849, four years into the Irish Famine, by hosting a ‘Famine Walk’ from Doolough to Louisburgh.

This year, and for the first time ever, Delphi Lodge have invited AFRI to follow the original route, starting from Lousiburgh and ending at Delphi Lodge, the destination in 1849, and finally some 164 years later, to be received with a long overdue and fitting welcome.

Whilst the Lodge of today is a truly warm and welcoming place, enjoyed by so many visitors from all over the world, the Doolough Tragedy as it came to be known, shows it’s more melancholy links to the past – like so many houses of its kind throughout our troubled history.

On Friday the 30th of March 1849, hundreds of starving people arrived at Louisburgh from far and wide to be counted and assessed for the continuation of their “outdoor relief”. Failure to attend would result in being struck off the register. The two officials responsible, a Captain Primrose and a Colonel Hogrove had decided not to remain at Louisburgh to carry out the inspection but to go on to Delphi Lodge, resulting in those being assessed having to follow on foot for counting by the following morning at 7 a.m. The inspection took place on that second day, but without any food or practical assistance being proffered. The “paupers” had then no choice but to make the 16 mile return journey once again on foot in the most appalling of weather conditions. Many perished along the way.

By symbolically opening its gates to the AFRI Famine Walk on Saturday May 18th this year, Delphi Lodge wishes to acknowledge its part in the Doolough Tragedy, whilst showing, on behalf of all of the Delphi staff, what we are today – a welcoming, traditional Irish Country House.

The day will be one of respectful homage to all victims of the Irish Famine. Very poignantly, placards will be carried bearing the names of several of those who are known to have perished at the time and on arrival at the Lodge, the gates will be opened to warmly welcome walkers, followed by the ceremonial planting of a tree and some potatoes.

The Famine Walk has been previously led by figures such as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Gary Whitedeer of the Choctaw Indian Nation and Christy Moore.

Further details to include itinerary and announcement of walk leaders will follow.

Small Intimate Weddings at Delphi

Small Intimate weddings at Delphi are proving to be a great success. More and more couples are moving away from the traditional one day events with 100+ guests and are choosing to invite smaller, more intimate groups of their closest family and friends to spend two or three days with them in the romantic setting of Delphi Lodge to celebrate their special day.

Very poignantly, in this the year of ‘The Gathering’ in Ireland, Delphi Lodge looks forward to welcoming brides from the UK and the USA – coming back to their roots – who will enjoy exclusive use of the house and grounds for what will be a memorable occasion for their own special gatherings of friends and families.

If you’re planning a small wedding (up to a maximum of 40 guests) and would like to find out more about Delphi Weddings just call Carole or Anne on +353 (0)95 4444 or email info@delphilodge.ie.
